What Is a Ventriculostomy?

Ventriculostomy is a surgical operation, which consists in the introduction of a catheter (cannula) into one of the lateral ventricles of the brain. This operation is performed to reduce increased intracranial pressure, to obtain cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the ventricles and its subsequent examination, as well as to administer antibiotics for inflammation or a contrast agent during an X-ray examination.
